Description:
This course involves the study of American and British independent cinemas of the 1980s. We will consider the industrial, political and cultural factors that led to the increasing commercial viability and social relevance of independent filmsduring this period. We will also investigate the role played by independent films in the development of cinematic realism, contemporary film genres and the representation of the ‘other’. While seeking a general definition of independent cinema, the course will also explore the substantial differences in aesthetics, mode of production and politics of representation between American and British independent filmmaking traditions. The list of filmmakers addressed in the course includes Jim Jarmusch, David Lynch, Todd Solondz, Spike Lee, Ken Loach, Derek Jarman and Lynne Ramsay.
