Description:
This course offers an introduction to the study of poetry, including its constitutive elements such as meter, sound, metaphor, rhyme, imagery, voice, character, narrative, and argument. Looking at English-language poems from various eras of history and national and ethnic traditions, we will begin with an emphasis on close reading of poetry with the goals of understanding what makes poetic language distinctive and how a poem is, in the words of Wallace Stevens, “the cry of its occasion.” As the course proceeds, we will work to understand how poems need also to be understood in wider social, historical, and political contexts.
