Description:
We will study the vibrant, powerful and fascinating literature of Native America. This course will focus on contemporary fiction and poetry as representations of an indigenous struggle against displacement, environmental disaster, and the violence of "progress." Language is a weapon in this struggle; perhaps it is also the field of battle. The course will also explore representations of an indigenous oral tradition and the relationship between culture and landscape. The readings have not yet been selected but writers might include: Leslie Marmon Silko, Sherman Alexie, Joy Harjo, N. Scott Momaday, Linda Hogan and James Welch.
