Name: ENGL - 241
Title: ENGLISH LITERATURE II: 1660 TO PRESENT
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2011
Credits: 3
Description:
The aim of this course is to provide a general overview of the history of the literature(s) of Great Britain between 1660 and the present, and to understand literary works in relation to historical, social, political, and intellectual contexts. We will develop skills in reading and understanding poetry, and learn about major movements—from the neoclassicism of the “long” 18th century through Romanticism, the Victorians, modernism (and postmodernism), concluding with some attention to the globalization of English and the rise of postcolonial literatures in English. The emphasis will be on poetry and prose fiction; because of the breadth of the course, drama and the novel are not included.
