Description:
What did the ancients believe about their gods, and what did it mean to believe in the ancient world? We will explore these issues by beginning with the oldest European stories about gods and mortals by Homer and Hesiod. After a turn to Roman epic with Virgil and Ovid, we will read several non-classical mythological works, including the _Epic of Gilgamesh_, the Norse _Eddas_, African myths of origin, and the Buddhist Chinese adventure story _Monkey_. Assignments will include two essays, two exams, regular quizzes, and some shorter writing assignments.
