Description:
This class focuses on the major American playwrights and their greatest works, tracing the development of themes and techniques in a medium that is ever changing and ever new. We will consider what makes the experience of reading plays different from the experience of reading novels or poems, and discuss the range of social, political and cultural issues they present. There will be two critical papers, quizzes (if necessary), a midterm and a final exam.
