Description:
This is a team-taught seminar in American Studies, co-scheduled with Amy Srebnick\\\'s Senior Seminar in History (HIST 400). Our general topic is the literature and social history of New York City from 1890- 1925. More specifically, we will study three neighborhoods -- the Lower East Side as a site of immigration, Harlem as a site of African-American urban community formation and of the Harlem Renaissance, and Greenwich Village as a site of social, political and artistic radicalism. There will be two instructors at all times in a shared classroom of English and history students. The seminar will culminate in an interdisciplinary research project.
