Semester: Spring - 2011

Credits: 3

Description:
ENWR250 Introduction to Writing Studies
In this introductory course students will be initiated into the study of non-literary texts: writing in the workplace, in everyday use, as social transaction, and as political rhetoric. Unlike most “writing” courses that teach how to write, in this course the subject is writing. The course will begin with strategies for rhetorical and discourse analysis of written texts and then move to one book-length and several article-length studies of written texts in a variety of different sites, for example: workplace writing, religious community writing, contemporary online community writing, and 19th century women’s writing in the domestic sphere. Together we will study written texts that are produced outside the academy, and which are seldom read in English classes. Writing assignments (two short papers and a final assignment) invite students to examine the significance of these texts in light of the theories discussed in class and through readings. Students will also complete an investigation of a writing site of their own choosing. Open to all English majors and students interested in the study of writing.
