Description:
This course examines American literature and film that portrays U.S. cultural, political and economic interests in Asia after WWII. The narratives we consider specifically contend with late 20th century U.S. hegemony in Asia, including U.S. wars in Asia and their consequences for Asian immigrants and refugees. We will particularly focus on the themes of gender, sexuality and U.S. empire. Examples of authors we may consider include Aimee Phan, Chang-rae Lee, William Gibson, Andrew Pham, Pearl Buck, and Jessica Hagedorn. Films may include Apocalypse Now, Hearts of Darkness, Daughter from Danang, and The King and I, among others.
