Description:
In this course we will read fiction and drama written by authors from Africa, the Middle East, South America, and China. These texts will address South African apartheid, life in modern Pakistan, life under the Taliban’s rule in Afghanistan, and political dissent in China and Argentina. Authors will include: Athol Fugard, Zakes Mda, Nadine Gordimer, Yasmina Khadra, Manuel Puig, Uzma Aslam Khan, and Yiyun Li. We will consider how authors depict conformity and dissent, how they address the motivations for and consequences of conformity and dissent, as well as whether other response options are available. Meets Gen Ed 2002 - Humanities, World Literature or General Humanities. Meets the 1983 General Education Requirement (GER) - Humanities, World Literature or General Humanities.
