Description:
In this course we will read fiction and drama written by authors from Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. These texts will address life during and after South African apartheid and under oppressive regimes in Afghanistan and Romania. Authors will most likely include: Athol Fugard, Zakes Mda, Nadine Gordimer, Yasmina Khadra, and Herta Muller. We will consider how authors depict conformity and dissent, how they address the motivations for and consequences of conformity and dissent, as well as whether other response options are available.
One 5-6 page essay, final exam, brief presentation, and some informal writing.
