Description:
This is an introductory course in the analysis of poetry. First we will study the elements of poetry, including such matters as diction, connotation, figurative language, imagery, sound, rhythm, closed and open form. After two examinations on the elements of poetry we will spend the rest of the semester with selected poems by Shakespeare, Pope, Wordsworth, Dickinson and Hughes. Our work will conclude with a critical paper on those selected poems.
