Course details

Name: ENGL - 260

Title: ART OF POETRY

Section: 11

Semester: Summer - 2011

Credits: 3

Description:
“No one is ahead of his time,” argues the poet Gertrude Stein, “it is only that the particular variety of creating his time is the one that his contemporaries who also are creating their own time refuse to accept.” This course will take Stein’s statement to heart by exploring the radically distinct ways in which poetry has created time from the ancient world to the present. We will investigate poetry by developing a critical vocabulary for analysis and interpretation of line, prosody, form and figuration as they vary during different historical, political and cultural contexts, engaging individual presentations, critical responses to readings, and culminating in an in-depth seminar paper at the end of the course. As Stein points out, its not that poetry is beyond its present time, but that its relationship to language and form is capable of creating a present that we are unable or unwilling to see—the very thing we will seek to uncover in the process of this course.
