Semester: Fall - 2011

Credits: 3

Description:
Designed to > study the literature and journalism of baseball, this course will provide students with an appreciation and understanding of selected classic baseball writings, ranging from Roger Kahn’s classic “Boys of Summer” to the seminal reporting of Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams in their book on the Balco steroid scandal to Tom Verducci’s inspiring tale in Sports Illustrated about the joy of Red Sox fans after their team finally won the World Series in 2004. Baseball writing
has traditionally been the most passionate and artful form of sportswriting and reporting, though in certain respects it was so the purists’ love of the game that blinded so many to the Performance enhancement ills that plagued it at the turn of the Century.
Studentsill read and analyze in writing these works while learning to differentiate what authors and journalists must do when celebrating the sport, as opposed to covering it. Guest authors and reporters will offer authoritative insights on the coverage of baseball, be it for purposes of producing nonfiction
books and daily journalism.
