Course details
Name: ENWR - 205
Title: CREATIVE NON-FICTION
Section: 31
Semester: Summer - 2011
Credits: 3
Description:
This first very writing-intensive pre-session course from May 16-June 2 will deal with the techniques of creative non-fiction, with emphasis on "creative". Pieces will include a first-person memoir; a character sketch or profile; a word-picture of an urban neighborhood; perhaps a local travel piece; other pieces as the class desires. This is not a grammar course. It is assumed you can write standard English sentences, and avoid run-on sentences, sentence fragments, confused syntax, ungrammatical construction, etc. Techniques will include showing, not telling; writing originally and avoiding cliches; pacing; having a story "arc" with a beginning, middle and end; perhaps using suspense. Writing will be read aloud and shared with classmates who will offer constructive, supportive critiques.
