Name: ENGL - 263

Title: ART OF DRAMA

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2011

Credits: 3

Description:
The course differentiates between drama and other genres such as poetry, prose, video, and film. Students will experience drama from a variety of world perspectives and time periods through several different critical lenses. We begin with historical context and basic dramatic conventions and then consider how issues such as gender, post-colonialism, class, and race impact the way these generic expectations are modified in the 20th century and beyond. Drama allows us see the world writ small, setting the stage for psychic exploration and social critique. Themes include the workings of fate, free will, and social pressures on human action; culpability, despair, ambition, delusion/illusion, and the possibilities of harmony.
