Description:
A new course on late-nineteenth-century popular fiction, including such emerging genres of the period as detection fiction, horror, colonial adventure fiction, and science fiction. We\'ll encounter such heroes as Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Professor Challenger, H. Rider Haggard’s Allan Quartermain, and of course such villains as Professor Moriarty, Mr. Hyde, Sweeney Todd, Dr. Moreau, and a vampire or two. We’ll also explore the development of the Victorian ghost story tradition by such masters as Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens, Sheridan LeFanu, and M. R. James. Requirements will include regular journal entries, dedicated participation in class discussion, and a single paper.
