Title: ENGLISH LITERATURE II: 1660 TO THE PRESENT

Section: 02

Semester: Spring - 2012

Credits: 3

Description:
The aim of this course is to provide a general overview of the history of the literature of Great Britain between 1660 and the present, and to understand literary works in relation to historical, social, political, and intellectual contexts. We will develop skills in reading and understanding poetry, and learn about major movements—from the neoclassicism of the “long” 18th century through Romanticism, the Victorians and modernism, concluding with some attention to the rise of anglophone literatures in former British colonies. The emphasis will be on poetry and short fiction; because of the breadth of the course, we will not be spending much time on drama or the novel.
