While it has been said that the U.S. nation was founded in principles of democracy and freedom from European forms imperial conquest, American studies scholars have over the past 30 years been grappling with not only the political, economic, military, but also the cultural dimensions of U.S. expansion as a form of empire. This course will be a survey of several literary and film texts that address this topic and will include canonical and non-canonical texts and place emphasis on minority writers, representing Latina/o, Asian American, and Native American literatures. We will pay particular attention to themes such as the notion of the frontier in American culture, the U.S. relationship with Mexico, U.S. interventions in Asia, and the role of gender and sexuality in ideas of U.S. expansion. Examples of authors we may consider include Theodore Roosevelt, Frederick Jackson Turner, Americo Paredes, Jack London, Carlos Bulosan, Sandra Cisneros, le thi diem thuy, and Sherman Alexie.
