Description:
This course reads the creative and critical expressions written by African American women. We will read across genre (slave narratives, autobiography, poetry, drama, novels, short fiction) from a socio-historical and Black feminist perspective. Significant attention will be given to the unique strategies, linguistics, and structures distinguishing an African American female aesthetic and analytic tradition. Some of the writers under consideration are Tayari Jones, Jamaica Kincaid, Toni Morrison, Gloria Naylor and Edwidge Danticat.
