Description:
This course introduces students to non-western fiction written by living writers. The readings focus on recent or current political and cultural conflicts and the resulting tensions between the individual and society, between individuals and within the individual. Clashes between traditional and modern values erupt in countries such as Papua New Guinea, India, Sri Lanka, China, and Nigeria. Readings may include Mr. Pip (Lloyd Jones), The Inheritance of Loss (Kiran Desai), Purple Hibiscus (Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie), The Bridegroom (Ha Jin), Reef (Romesh Gunesekera), and a collection of stories from many countries, Words Without Borders: The World Through the Eyes of Writers. There will be three or four graded assignments including formal papers, journals and an in-class essay.
