Title: MAJOR DIRECTORS
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2012
Credits: 3
Description:
Major Directors for Fall 2012 will focus on two canonical directors from the era of the Hollywood studio system—John Ford and Howard Hawks. While both directors are frequently associated with the western, and we will study a number of westerns in this course, neither can be tied exclusively to this one important genre. For Ford, there are the pictures with Will Rogers, his RKO dramas, his Irish cycle, his war films and studio message pictures such as The Grapes of Wrath. Hawks also created a diverse body of work, including screwball comedies, gangster and war films, musicals, and two popular Bogart-Bacall pictures. Thus, this course will focus on the relationship between authorship, genre and studio. Films likely to be screened include: Steamboat Round the Bend, The Grapes of Wrath, Fort Apache, Wagon Master, Only Angels Have Wings, Red River, Monkey Business, Rio Bravo. Students will be required to see at least six films in addition to those on the primary screening list. A mid-term and final essay will be required.
