Description:
This course will feature international cinema produced from 1980 to the present. It will focus on films of extreme experience in which groundbreaking directors employ innovative techniques to depict characters as they descend into madness. Filmmakers under consideration include Pedro Almodovar, Joel and Ethan Coen, David Cronenberg, Jonathan Demme, Werner Herzog, Wong Kar-Wai, David Lynch, Guy Madden, Christopher Nolan. Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, and Guillermo del Torro.

Course requirements: active participation in class discussion and on Blackboard; weekly screenings in class and additional films on DVD viewed outside of class; readings on reserve; mid-term; final.
