ENLT 250: Latin American Poetry

Mondays-Thursdays, students will be expected to turn in writing exercises on-line. There is no specific time when you need to be on-line on a specific day, but during the 24 hour period when an assignment is due, the student will be asked to read a group of poems, to consider my notes and questions, and to write a response. For instance, I might say something like this: "On Tuesday, read these 12 poems and write three paragraphs in response to the poetry's representation of the role of the artist in society. Be sure to read the article I've posted on Neruda and include it in your essay. Due by 11:59pm at the latest." You would then have all day and all evening to work on the assignment, to read the poems and materials I might share, and to write the short essay. I try to build assignments around the amount of time we would have met in class in a traditional classroom (about 3 hours) plus the amount of time you would be asked to do some homework reading/writing. But you'll have the flexibility of doing your daily work in the morning, or afternoon, or night, as long as you get it done by 11:59pm.

This course is an introduction to 20th century Latin American poetry (translated into English). You do not need to speak Spanish or Portuguese for this class.

The list of readings has not yet been finalized, but some of the AMAZING poets we will read are Pablo Neruda (Chile), Cesar Vallejo (Peru), Adelia Prado (Brazil), Ruben Dario (Nicaragua), and Jorge Luis Borges (Argentina). Students will develop their abilities to analyze poetry, to think carefully about the text as representation, to appreciate the subtleties of poetic language and devices, and to cultivate their sophistication as readers.
