Description:
This course will explore the emergence of Young Adult Literature (YAL) as a genre that includes established classics as well as contemporary fiction. Additionally, this course will examine the historical and cultural contexts surrounding the genreā€™s development; discuss these works through multiple lenses; study relevant criticism; apply literary theory to explore portrayals of adolescence as socio-cultural constructs; and examine how the literature of and about young adulthood reflects, responds to or reacts against those paradigms. Readings may focus on the younger age spectrum of YA, and may include authors such as: Suzanne Collins, Rick Riordan, Louis Sachar, Lois Lowry, John Green, Catherine Jinks, Walter Dean Meyers, Jay Asher, Paolo Bacigalupi, Gordon Korman, Catherine Gilbert Murdock, Adam Rex, Chris Rylander, Jerry Spinelli, and Roald Dahl.
