This course number was formerly ENGL 226. (Do nor repeat if you have already taken ENGL 226.)

This course will introduce you to one of the most fruitful periods of American literature, the American Renaissance (ca. 1830-1860), through a study of canonical and non-canonical texts, and help you understand how these writers created an American tradition, different from that of their English forebears. Special emphasis will be placed on historicist, feminist, gender, and class approaches to the texts. Authors include Hawthorne, Poe, Melville, Margaret Fuller,Harriet Jacobs, Thoreau, Louisa May Alcott, and others. A unit on Transcendentalist thought (and writers) will also be included. This course might also be called "American Romanticism"
Course requirements include: one short paper (5 pp.), one longer research essay (7 pp.), one midterm and one final exam, and some informal writing assignments. Class participation is expected.
