Title: SPEC TOP: BRAZILIAN LITERATURE

Section: 02

Semester: Fall - 2012

Credits: 3

Description:
Note: You do not need to speak Portuguese to take this class. It is conducted entirely in English.

For over a century, Brazil has tantalized the imaginations of Americans. The swinging hips of samba, the five-day festivals of carnaval, the subtle rhythms of bossa nova, and the gorgeous play of Brazilian soccer have tremendous international appeal. Our semester together will give students the opportunity to discover the rich and dynamic literary tradition of Brazil, a tradition that (like Brazilian music, dance, and sport) is informed by African, indigenous and European influences, by “Third World” economics and by lush American landscapes. This class will be a survey of Brazilian literature with a special emphasis on the 20th Century. Authors might include: Machado de Assis, Jorge Amado, Clarice Lispector, Joao Guimaraes Rosa, Carlos Drummond, and Adelia Prado. We will discuss important themes for Brazilian literature, such as interracial desire and hybrid identity, the relationship between Catholicism and Afro-Brazilian religious practices (candomble) and the struggle to create a uniquely Brazilian art in the face of European and American influence. We will explore many other themes as well, themes that are perhaps not so wrapped up in "national" questions - such as the relationship between language and self-knowledge, the delights and torments of erotic love, and the power (as well as the burden) of family ties.
