Title: MIDDLE ENGLISH LITERATURE

Section: 11

Semester: Summer - 2012

Credits: 3

Description:
Students will study the literature of England from 1100 to the 1400s with reference to its historical and social contexts including religion, politics, music, and art. The influences of Continental, Celtic, and other traditions on English literature and language include Arthurian romances, folk and fairy lore, and lyrics of the European troubadours and mystics. Works will be analyzed using global themes such as the Courtly Love tradition, memento mori, ubi sunt, and the turning wheel of Fortune during this tumultuous, challenging period. Readings include anonymous Middle English lyrics and ballads, the Lais of Marie de France, the Gest of Robyn Hode, the Pearl poem, Gawain and the Green Knight, Everyman, and a selection of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Previous knowledge of Middle English is not required; most readings are available in both Middle English and modern English translations.
