Title: MYTH AND LITERATURE
Section: 02
Semester: Spring - 2013
Credits: 3
Description:
What did the ancients believe about their gods, and what did it mean to believe in the ancient world? We will explore these issues by beginning with the oldest European stories about gods and mortals by Homer and Hesiod. After a turn to Roman epic with Virgil and Ovid, we will read several non-classical mythological works, including the Norse Eddas, African myths of origin, the Buddhist Chinese adventure story "Monkey," and the Old English story of Beowulf. Assignments will include two essays, two exams, regular quizzes, and some shorter writing assignments.
