Description:
This course involves the study of American independent cinema since 1980. We will consider the industrial, political and cultural factors that led to the increasing commercial viability and social relevance of American independent films in the contemporary period. Our focus will be on the movement's relationship to the aesthetic and ideological conventions of Hollywood cinema. We will engage with theories of authorship, genre and realism, and consider the representation of race, gender, sexuality and class in the films of this period. The list of filmmakers addressed in the course includes John Sayles, Jim Jarmusch, David Lynch, Spike Lee, Todd Haynes, Kimberly Peirce, Todd Solondz, Kelly Reichardt and Ramin Bahrani.
