Special Topic: “New Hollywood”
This course features films made in the 1970s, the “New Hollywood” period that saw the major studios in decline and young directors like Steven Spielberg seizing control of their increasingly personal projects. We will study the works of this largely film school-educated generation of filmmakers, their relation to classical Hollywood and post-WWII European cinema, as well as their ongoing influence. In addition, we will consider the historical context out of which “New Hollywood” emerged.
Directors under consideration will include Robert Altman (M*A*S*H), John Carpenter (Halloween), Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather), Brian DePalma (Carrie), William Friedkin (The Exorcist), George Lucas (Star Wars), Martin Scorsese (Taxi Driver), and Steven Spielberg (Jaws).
