Course details
Name: ENGL - 471
Title: TEACHING ENGLISH --METHODS
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2013
Credits: 4
Description:
This course prepares English education candidates to teach English on the secondary and middle school grade levels. English Methods begins with Jean Piaget’s concept on how we learn: building knowledge between the interplay of assimilation and accommodation. Future teachers of English in grades 6-12 will then learn how to teach children to become competent writers, no matter what the genre, and they will learn a foundational understanding of composition pedagogy, including how to
respond to and assess student writing.
This course will also demonstrate to future teachers of English how to engage all children in the reading of all genres with the broad goalof guiding children to becoming life-long readers. Once again the implication of Piaget’s vision and other pertinent theorists will be studied in the context of pre-reading, during-reading and post-reading activities.
Future teachers of English completing this course will possess
specific day-to-day teaching methods in Language Arts based on the Common Core State Standards; they will demonstrate competency in creating engaging lessons and unit plans, possess professional, research based justifications for the varied teaching methods involved in the teaching of reading and writing, and they will possess a competency in their social intuitions on how to care for and respect young people as they guide children towards their own intellectual and social maturity.
Ideally, this course communicates both the discipline and the human dimensions of English as a subject in the classroom and as a discipline, including familiarization with adolescent and young adult literature and the uses of technology in the English classroom. Thisis a course in the professional sequence not credited as an English
elective. (4 s.h.)"
