In this course, students will read nineteenth and twentieth-century short stories that explore the limits of race and gender and the strategies writers and characters use to evade them. Readings will include short stories by Henry James, Charlotte Gilman Perkins, Ralph Ellison, William Faulkner, and Jamaica Kincaid. In addition to completing all assigned readings and engaging in a written on-line discussion, students will write two response essays and one longer analytical essay.
