Title: ADVANCED POETRY WORKSHOP

Section: 01

Semester: Spring - 2013

Credits: 3

Description:
Advanced Poetry Writing, in this upper-course Level, will explore the practices of both reading and composing Poetry and exploring Poetics. The course will be geared to both private and community/group constructive evaluation and commentary. Although the class will be structured in the “Workshop” format, each session will be founded upon an initial, academic lecture/presentation by the Professor, with the purpose of implementing the craft of learning. Critical to understanding is that HALF OF WRITING IS READING. This course will be open to exploring all forms of poetic writing, addressing both formal meter and American Free Verse styles. If there is a class consensus, the issues of poetry publishing may be included and addressed in class presentation.

As a result of this course, your ability to analyze creative reading and to express your own ideas creatively in original writing will improve and become more professional.

Required Texts: Gibbons, Reginald, ed. The Poet’s Work: 29 Poets on the Origins and Practice of Their Art. Chicago: The University of Chicago Press; 1979/1989. Either Editions (6th through 8th) will be fine.

Course Requirements: Perpetual Creative Writing in assigned areas: One ten-page (minimum length), academic paper: A nonfiction, analytical essay directed toward a specified, literary study assigned by the Professor.
