Description:
A course on late-nineteenth-century British popular fiction, including such emerging genres of the period as detection fiction, horror, colonial adventure fiction, and science fiction. We'll encounter such heroes as Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes,H. Rider Haggard’s Allan Quatermain, and of course some villains, too, including such dastardly scoundrels as Professor Moriarty, Mr. Hyde, Dr. Moreau, and a vampire or two. We’ll also explore the development of the Victorian ghost story tradition by such masters as Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell,and Sheridan LeFanu. An added component of the class will be regular viewings of early Hollywood film renderings of colonial adventure, horror, and other late Victorian popular genres. Requirements will include regular journal entries, dedicated participation in class discussion, one exam, and one paper.
