Description:
This course will serve as an introduction to LGBT writers and themes across a variety of genres, disciplines, and time periods. We will examine how for centuries writers have sought to make sense of stigma, silence, violence, and suppression. Placed within the context of current day events, this course will reflect on and generate strategies for sharing one’s voice in the face of marginalization and discrimination. Writers may include Walt Whitman, James Baldwin, Jane Addams, Audre Lorde, Adrienne Rich, Andrew Sullivan, Michael Warner, Jonathan Alexander, Ernest Hemingway, Alison Bechdel, Jeanette Winterson, J. Blake Scott.
