Title: MAJOR FILM GENRES

Section: 01

Semester: Fall - 2013

Credits: 3

Description:
During much of the 1940s, Hollywood movies were as popular as they had ever been and box office attendance at movie houses set records. As the studios met the challenge of creating a wartime product and then the Cold War freeze and its blacklist, their genres reflected these changes as each entered a new phase of maturity. For the Fall 2013 semester, Major Film Genres will be devoted to studying the western, the musical and film noir during the 1940s. Our study of genre will be accompanied by a close look at the changing profile of the Hollywood studios during this time and its shift toward independent production. Films likely to be studied include Duel in the Sun (1946), The Ox-Bow Incident (1943), Broadway Melody of 1940 (1940), Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Gilda (1946), Cornered (1945), Mildred Pierce (1945). A mid-term essay and final project will be assigned.
