Description:
A study of modern poetry with a focus on W. B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, Stevie (Florence Margaret) Smith, and W. H. Auden. Class meetings will involve discussion and close readings of poems. We will spend two weeks on one of the greatest poems of the twentieth century, T. S. Eliot's THE WASTE LAND, devoting some time also to looking at the early drafts that Eliot later revised. In addition, we will listen to recordings of the poets reading their poems. Work may include oral reports, a mid-term, a final exam, and a final paper. This is a course for lovers of poetry.
