Description:
Our focus will be on the novels and stories of Charles Dickens, one of the most remarkable figures in English literary history. We will address Dickens's life and work, his cultural milieu, and his impact on the novel form. Some issues addressed will include the impact of 19th-century melodrama on his fiction, his development of social realism, his use of humor, and the nature and limits of his social criticism. Novels read will likely include The Pickwick Papers (selections), David Copperfield, Bleak House, and Our Mutual Friend, along with some of Dickens's Christmas stories and journalism.
