Description:
Special Topics in Film Studies will focus on Hollywood and World War II. We will study the representation of the battlefronts and the home front in American films as well as the relationship between the film industry and the US government during the war. While our emphasis will be on narratives and documentaries released between 1942 and 1945, we will also study Hollywood’s representation of the returning veteran and a cycle of films centered on the war produced toward the end of the decade. Films likely to be screened include Casablanca, Bataan, Tender Comrade, Hollywood Canteen, The Best Years of Our Lives, Twelve O’Clock High. A mid-term and final essay will be assigned.
