Name: ENGL - 336
Title: AMERICAN LITERARY REALISM
Section: 01
Semester: Spring - 2014
Credits: 3
Description:
The age of Literary Realism in American, roughly 1865-1910, embraces such widely diverse writers as Twain, James, Crane, Dreiser, Jewett, Chopin, and DuBois.Their subjects and themes reflect the post-Civil War period of regional awareness, national definition, the closing of the frontier, the new roles of women and African-Americans, and the intensification of industrialization. The earlier 19th-century optimism becomes the objective ("tell the truth") and often hopeless world of the naturalists writing up to the pre-World War I era. We will be dealing with literary substance and style as well as philosophical, historical and sociological currents. Requirements include two 6-page papers, midterm, final.
