Description:
This course will introduce students to auteur theory as a tool for film analysis, focusing on the works of three émigré directors: Alfred Hitchcock, Roman Polanski, and Alfonso Cuarón. We will study characteristic elements--recurring plot structures, character types, themes, and visual/aural style—in films from their native countries, as well as those made in the U.S. and abroad. Films in the course include Strangers on a Train, Psycho, Rosemary’s Baby, Chinatown, Y Tu Mamá También and Children of Men.
Requirements:

In-class screenings; active class participation; weekly readings and postings on Blackboard; screenings of DVDs outside of class; a short paper on each director; in-class final.
