IN THIS COURSE WE WILL READ MOSTLY FICTION, BUT ALSO FILM AND POSSIBLY SOME DRAMA AND POETRY, FROM AROUND THE WORLD THAT EXAMINES THE WAYS IN WHICH WRITERS AND CULTURAL ARTISTS OF A PARTICULAR COUNTRY OR CULTURE REPRESENT THEIR TRADITIONAL VALUES AND STRUGGLE AGAINST SOME TRADITIONAL NORMS AND RESTRAINTS. WE WILL EXAMINE HOW TRADITION IS NEVER "FIXED" BUT ALWAYS CHANGING. AND LOOK AT THE IMPACT OF WESTERN COLONIALISM ON NATIVE CULTURES OF AFRICA AND SOUTH ASIA. WRITERS AND CULTURAL WORKERS STUDIED INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: CHINUA ACHEBE, JOSEPH CONRAD, TAYYIB SALIH, MIRA NAIR, JAMAICA KINCAID, GHASSAN KANAFANI
