Title: INTERMEDIATE FICTION WORKSHOP
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2014
Credits: 3
Description:
Our object in this course is to excel as writers of prose fiction. As such, we will discuss narrative technique and creativity, placing a special emphasis on the possibilities of the sentence. Through vigorous practice we will increase writing fluency and focus; and we will analyze and discuss contemporary short story masterpieces, mining them for tricks that we ourselves might use. We will subject our stories to peer-critique, and in developing skills as critics, hone our abilities to self-evaluate and find solutions to the manifold problems part and parcel to the craft. We will revise, polish, continue to revise, and push our stories in the direction of literary publication. Upon completion of this course, students should have an increased insight into the mechanics of successful short stories as well as a stronger resource from which to develop stories of their own. Course work will include two revised short stories, one of which will be expanded and further revised, and a reading journal and Live Lit response. Prerequisites: ENWR 213 (or ENWR 200, adjusted to 213 credit).
