The course focuses on three central novelists of the modern and contemporary era whose work explores the relationships between the circumscribed local worlds of their characters and the complexities of race, culture, and class in America. Representative novels might include Beloved, Song of Solomon, Paradise, Absalom, Absalom!, Light in August, Human Stain, Counterlife, Portnoy's Complaint, Operation Shylock.
