Description:
We open with a showing of an early episode of the acclaimed drama, PBS's "Downton Abbey," seeking class markers and struggles. After an introduction to Marxist literary theory, we spend the remainder of the semester reading post-1900 U.S. literature which represents class status, class conflict, and analyses of capitalism. Some titles under consideration are Paul Fussell's *Class,* William Faulkner's, *As I Lay Dying,* Jamie Johnson's documentary, *Born Rich,* Helen Maria Viramontes' *Under the Feet of Jesus,* Sherman Alexie's, *Reservation Blues,* Dorothy Allison's, *Bastard Out of Carolina,* and Toni Morrison's *A Mercy.* 3 credits. Hybrid format.
