The American Renaissance is one of the most fruitful periods of American literature, ca. 1830-1860. Authors include Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, the Transcendentalists (Emerson, Fuller, Thoreau), Frederick Douglass, Lydia Maria Child, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harriet Jacobs, Fanny Fern, Walt Whitman, Louisa May Alcott, and others. We will analyze literary texts to understand the changing gender roles, social conflicts, and historical and philosophical movements in the young democracy. We will also look at the innovations these American authors were making--innovations that set them apart from their European peers.
