Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2014

Description:
The term “independent” has been applied to a wide-ranging and diverse body of work made outside of (and often in opposition to) the mainstream film industry. However, the history of the relationship between the independents and Hollywood is complex. To clarify and refine our understanding of “independent cinema” we will consider the industrial, aesthetic, and ideological aspects of films from three periods: the experimental, low-budget films of the mid 1960s to mid-1970s; the innovative, alternative “indie” titles that came to prominence in the mid-1980s; and the independent/industry collaborations (“Indiewood”) of the 1990s-2000s.
Filmmakers under consideration include Wes Anderson, Charles Burnett, John Cassavetes, Joel and Ethan Coen, Sophia Coppola, Tom DeLillo, Lena Dunham, Jim Jarmusch, Spike Jonze, Spike Lee, Jennie Livingston, David Lynch, Adolfus Mekas, George Romero, John Sayles, Stephen Soderberg, Todd Solondz, and Quentin Tarantino.
