Description:
This is a new course designed for students who want an in-depth survey of American literature in its historical and cultural contexts.It covers the American literary traditions from the earliest settlers in the 17th century, through the political movements of the 18th century, through the American Renaissance and into the Age of Realism to 1890. We will read many different kinds of texts: stories, novels, poems, historical documents, sermons, essays, captivity narratives, and other works by canonical and non-canonical writers. We will trace the development through literary texts of what we have come to define as American. Short papers and two exams.
