Course details
Name: ENFL - 356
Title: CONTEMPORARY FILM
Section: 01
Semester: Fall - 2014
Credits: 3
Description:
This course will address the aesthetic and ideological characteristics of global art cinema in the contemporary period, focusing on films made after 2000. We will consider how the conventions of art cinema – ambiguity, auteurism, psychological realism, reflexivity – have been revised in the past fifteen years in response to a rapidly changing cultural and industrial context for global filmmaking. We will explore how theories of globalization, neoliberalism, multiculturalism, queerness and postcolonialism are influencing contemporary film culture. The list of screened films may include Tropical Malady, Dogtooth, Headless Woman, To Die Like a Man, Bamako and In the Mood for Love.
